Democracy has always been a delicate plant in Bangladesh, seldom growing steadily.[1]Since the birth of Bangladesh, democracy has been facing a bunch of setbacks in the path of its institutionalization. The working of parliamentary democracy in Bangladesh naturally is not only unhealthy but positively it runs counter to the very spirit it stands for.[2] Bangladesh is facing the problems of parliamentary democracy partly for colonial legacy and mainly because of authoritarian past.[3] Even democracy as a form of governance has not been given a fair deal from political leaders and parties.

Report on Democracy in Bangladesh: An Overview
Bangladesh was under the British colonial rule for near about two hundred years and then under internal colonialism of Pakistan for twenty four years. Having been oppressed and discriminated by the West Pakistani ruler, the people of East Pakistan waged a long democratic movement initially aimed at achieving autonomy for the rights of the majority population of Pakistan and then started a liberation war aimed at establishing democratic order and attaining a target rate of economic growth for development. Bangladesh after having been independent introduced the parliamentary democracy as political system in the constitution following the Indian and British West Ministerial model of parliamentary democracy.

Report on Prerequisites of Successful Working of Democracy
Democracy is not only an ideal or a goal but also essentially a functioning system which therefore has to be built up on constructing arrangement. In other words, democracy is an objective that countries strive to attain in an apparently endless process of evolution. In this process the form, shape and content of democracy may vary from environment to environment and thus no two democracies can be regarded as totally similar. Nevertheless, democracy essentially requires some prerequisites which ensure that ruling authority is based on popular mandate and remains accountable to the people[1].

Definition of democracy, as a form of government, are various, But like many other definitions in political science, they differ in their content and application. Democracy, according to the Greeks, is the Government in which people rule over themselves. Aristotle considered it as a perverted form of government. Parliamentary Democracy in Bangladesh
Democracy is a continuous political process which can only be sustained and developed by giving due attention to certain issues. It is never completely achieved; it grows into its being.[1] During the nineteenth century followed by industrial revolution and expansion of capitalism, democracy took off as a major political and social process based on maturing British and American model of democracy. Subsequently, after the end of the Second World War, most of the states of the Latin America, Central Europe and Asia have become liberated from the clutch of the colonial rule and they have gradually been turned into democratic political system. Like other countries of the contemporary world, Bangladesh after having been independent from the internal colonialism of Pakistan, adopted the parliamentary democracy as the political system enshrined in the constitution. Since then, we have passed about thirty-eight years but our achievements in the sphere of democracy and development are not noteworthy.
